Pipeliner Of The Year (2004-2005) - The Cheyenne Plains Project
Welcome to Cheyenne Plains (Pipeliner of the year award)
Cheyenne Plains Gas Pipeline Company has completed a new 36-inch natural gas pipeline project, extending from near the Wyoming-Colorado border to south-central Kansas. The Cheyenne Plains Pipeline will serve markets in the Midwest with connections to several mid-continent pipelines near Greensburg, Kansas.
This project was underwritten with long-term firm transportation contracts for the full capacity of the pipeline. The 36-inch pipeline extends 380 miles from the Cheyenne Hub just south of Cheyenne, Wyoming to Greensburg, Kansas. Interconnects with other interstate natural gas pipelines will help customers transport natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to Midwest markets served by these pipelines. Cheyenne Plains currently has a design capacity of 560,000 MDth/d. An expansion to 730,000 MDth/d is projected to be completed by the end of 2005.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the project in March 2004, and construction began soon thereafter. Automated welding allowed completion of up to three miles of pipeline per day, and the pipeline portion of the project was completed ahead of schedule. The pipeline was put into initial service on December 1, 2004. Upstream compression and treating facilities at Cheyenne were completed during January, and on January 31, 2005, all of the pipeline facilities were placed in service with a design capacity of 560,000 MDth/d. The second phase of the project, increasing the capacity by 170,000 MDth/d, is expected to be completed by the end of 2005.
